Yoga Equipment: What Equipment Do You Need?
If you are just starting out with yoga, you may not know what type of yoga equipment to get. The yoga industry continues to develop various products such as clothing and equipment that you may need before entering a yoga class. But the truth is, it doesn’t really take you much to get started with yoga.
When starting a yoga practice at home, it is better to purchase clothing and equipment that are specifically made for yoga. Here’s what you need to know.
Essential yoga equipment
Most yoga studios require you to wear something to class. But you don’t need loads of printed yoga pants or designer gear to attend the class. Start with something like comfortable, breathable clothing that you already own and only buy medium-weight basics for things that you miss.
- Pants or shorts
You can’t go wrong with yoga pants in solid colors like black, brown, dark gray or navy. You can combine these with different types of tops, and when you get these made from high quality materials they can have a long, long life.
It is highly recommended that you wear tops that are fairly body-hugging so that your shirt doesn’t go over your head during poses such as forward bend. Shirts or tops made from moisture wicking material are also good choices, especially if you sweat a lot or plan to take a hot yoga class.
- Sports bras
Sports bras are a must for women. Although yoga is usually considered a low impact activity, wearing a decent sports bra can help keep your “knockers” in place between poses. Sports bras also make your yoga practice more comfortable.
- Headbands or hair ties
Regardless of your gender, you need to keep long hair secure and in place before embarking on a yoga class. This is to prevent stray locks from falling into your eyes and face. You can get a headband or a simple hair tie for this.
- Yoga socks
These are not really considered a requirement for attending a yoga class. In fact, yoga teachers would even advise you to just go barefoot. Regardless, there are some people who don’t like taking off their shoes or socks in front of strangers. Because of this, a pair of yoga socks with handles on the bottom can be a great investment. This can help protect your feet and ensure good traction. Ordinary socks will not be able to do this because you will end up sliding and sliding all over the place.
Lots of stores sell yoga gear virtually everywhere these days, and it’s perfectly normal to see yoga pants that cost at least over $ 100. You might not feel comfortable spending that much money on a single pair of pants, but there are stores like Amazon, YogaOutlet, and Target that have quality options for under $ 50. Buy at least two pairs of these pants and tops and you’ll be set for months.
It is common to see yoga mats used in gyms and yoga studios. These items are also known as “sticky mats” and help define personal space. At the same time, ties create traction for hands and feet so that they don’t slip, especially when things get a little sweaty. The mat also serves as padding for the hard floor.
Gyms usually provide mats and yoga studios rent them out, usually for a dollar or two per class. This can be good for the first couple of grades, but a major downside to these mats is that a lot of people have used them and there is no guarantee of how often they will be cleaned. Perhaps buying your own mat is a better idea.
Good quality yoga mats can be expensive. You can set them back to around $ 80 to $ 120, but you can find cheaper starter yoga mats for as little as $ 20 on Amazon or Target. However, remember that when you buy a cheaper mat you will often replace it because it wears out so quickly. When you are ready to devote yourself to a yoga practice, it makes sense to invest in a good yoga mat.
When buying a mat, decide which functions are important to you. Features like length, material, thickness, traction, durability, comfort and whether it is easy to clean. Get a mat with good ratings based on your needs.
Yoga gears are very useful for a potential yoga practice. Yoga equipment helps students maintain healthy alignment in a variety of yoga positions such as flexions, openings, and rotations. They will also help you get the most out of each pose without injuring yourself.

Mat bags or loops
This is useful for lugging your yoga mat back and forth into the studio. These bags make it easy for you to carry your rolled mat over your shoulder without it coming off. Slings usually use Velcro straps to secure your mat in its rolled position. It also comes with a strap that you can just toss over your shoulder. Slings also have additional storage space, but some do not. Mat bags, on the other hand, usually come in two styles: one uses Velcro straps to secure the mat, and the other is a snap or zipper pocket that holds your mat. Both provide additional storage space for other things like clothing, mobile devices, and wallets.
Yoga studios usually have blankets in stock for students to use during class. Grab one or two before class starts.
Blankets can be used to raise the hips in seated poses, and they also provide support for recumbent poses. Just doing yoga at home eliminates the need to buy new blankets. Just use the ones you have at home.
