“Rural life may not be a panacea, but it might be more believable if respondents actually went to rural areas. It is soooo NYC folks to think of Burlington VT (a small town) as a downright wilderness. Or Albany NY (the capital of the state). Or Beacon NY (about an hour’s drive north of NYC). Or even Whitefish MT, a resort ski resort for city dwellers.
You don’t need the city to live well. As a real rural person, I barely noticed that there was a pandemic. I’m out most of the day. I have no problems with distance learning with my children because I have already taught at home. I don’t have to get into “farm form” because I already have a garden and raise animals. I would never run out of meat because I buy it (100% pasture and pork) from a farmer down the street for almost the same cost as the grocery store. I’m not learning to work from home because we’ve been doing it for over a decade.
What really puzzled me from a distance COVID is how many people seem to hate being in their own four walls, can’t do enough for themselves and, as much as I want to say, don’t want to spend time with their children or families. They prefer to go to the office and send them to a state day care center. I am confused by people who don’t believe that it should be their job to raise their children or to feed themselves.
I live an hour away from two big cities on the east coast, which I can go anytime. Is it a panacea? Yeah, maybe it is, especially when we compare it to those few confused NYC folks. “
