Was There an Obsession with Weight reduction Throughout Lockdown?

Was there an obsession with weight loss during lockdown?

Was there an obsession with weight loss during lockdown? When the world stalled, life changed drastically. As families and friends were separated, mental health problems increased. With nowhere to go and a lot of uncertainty, fitness became a lifeline for many.

While the lockdown gave people the chance to focus more on themselves, did it lead to an obsession with weight loss? Here we look at how the lockdown has affected our health and fitness.

How people responded to fitness in lockdown

At lockdown, people generally went one of two ways. They either went through a strict diet and exercise regime or they let themselves go. You’ll find pretty much an equal number of posts on social media about staying fit as you joke about piling up the pounds in lockdown.

There seemed to be an obsession with weight loss that made those who went the other way feel worse about themselves. However, a select group made it their business to ensure that women don’t feel bad about the way they are dealing with the situation.

It was interesting to see how differently people reacted to the lockdown. However, it was also a little sad to see so much emphasis on weight loss.

Why has a pandemic highlighted our obsession with being thin?

There are a number of reasons why weight loss has become a key issue while on lockdown. Those in the fitness industry were suddenly unemployed, so they had to switch to providing online services and promoting more on social media.

People also needed direction and something to focus on during the lockdown. Under normal circumstances, many find it difficult to maintain a fitness program due to lack of time. Since there was suddenly a lot of time available, they used it to finally get in shape. It was also a good coping strategy for distracting the mind.

Then there is the government campaign to fight obesity. Since the coronavirus is known to be more deadly for obese people, a national campaign has been launched to get us fitter. People are more concerned about their health and are looking for ways to lose weight through various methods.

However, it can be argued that the main reason behind the obsession with being slim was because of the importance we attach to looks as a society. When you’re leaner, you feel good, something we all needed during lockdown.

While in some ways the obsession with staying fit helped many people, others felt terrible too. If you gain weight during lockdown, does it really matter? The answer is no. We all handle things differently, and whether you’ve lost or gained weight, it’s perfectly fine.
