How to choose the perfect sports bra
How to Choose the Perfect Sports Bra: Did you know that up to 75% of women wear the wrong bra size? Ouch! Now you might get away with it in your everyday bra, but not your sports bra!
Did you also know that every fifth woman does not exercise because of her breasts? Impressive!
Finally, did you know that your breasts can move up to 7 inches while exercising if not supported? That’s a lot of jiggle!
These statistics really show the importance of finding the perfect sports bra for you. The right sports bra will keep your girls in place so you can focus on your workout.
Follow my expert tips and trust that the next run all you have to do is focus on the path that you need to focus on.
Size is everything
I bet you think a man would say that. And I have to say in this case you are right. The basis for the perfect sports bra is the right fit. If it doesn’t fit well, it won’t work well.
So where do we start? Simple, it all starts with a simple action. All you need is a soft tape measure and mirror and you are gone.
The two measurements you need to find your correct sports bra size are your under bust and your over bust. Your underbust measurement gives your band size and your overbust your cup size. Put the two together and hey presto – your bra size!
To measure your underbust, simply run your tape measure around your chest and measure horizontally around your rib cage where your bra band normally sits. Make sure the tape is not too tight. As a rule of thumb, you should be able to put two fingers under it.
To find your over-breast, slide the tape up and do the same around the fullest part of your breasts (usually over your nipples). It is best to take this measurement with a non-padded everyday bra. For the most accurate results, consult a bra friend for help with the band.
You have your measurements, what’s next? Simple, a quick online search for bra size calculators will reveal a variety of options to help you find your size. Alternatively, most sports bra websites have their own online changing room where you can easily determine your size based on your measurements.
Get the right support
OK, so you’ve found your size. What’s next? The next thing is to get the right support. You don’t want to run a marathon in a strict fashion crop!
Different sports bras offer different levels of support, so-called impact levels. There are usually three levels of effectiveness. Low, medium and high. However, some brands use “Extreme” for their bras, which is the absolute best support.
Quite simply, you need to couple the impact level with the activity you want to do. Yoga = little impact. Golf = medium impact. Running = strong effect. You get the picture.
If you are unsure or have a little more on top, it is best to play it safe and get to an impact level. It’s safer to wear a running bra to your golf game than a yoga bra for running!
Wear a running bra
It has to be comfortable
This last tip is arguably the most important. There’s no point in finding the perfect fit and support if your sports bra isn’t comfortable. Nothing will get you to banish your bra to the back of your drawer faster than poor comfort.
So what do we need to look out for to make sure our new sports bra passes the comfort test? Try on the sports bra and check the following.
Check for possible friction points. Move in as many different directions as you can. Swing your arms. Twist. You shouldn’t feel any points that could potentially rub. The bra itself shouldn’t move either. If so, it can result in a long training session.
Check the straps. Once you get the correct length you should be able to put two fingers under each strap. If they’re too tight, they can dig in. If they’re too loose, they can slip.
Check the band. You should be able to breathe deeply and comfortably. Do the two-finger test under the tape again. Remember that 80% of your sports bra’s support comes from the band. So expect it to be tighter than your everyday bra.
Check the cups. Your breasts should be completely contained in the cups. If your cup overflows, it might be too small. If there are wrinkles in the cup, they may be too big.
Finally, do the jump test. The best way to check the bra support is to jump up and down. Your breasts should feel supported and secure. If there’s too much movement, look for a style with a higher impact.
Beware of size refusal. Anyway, it’s my fault. I measure myself and realize that I’ve switched to a 14D (my vacation was so good!). Surely the tape measure is lying, and I’m trying to sneak my way into my existing 12C. We women can do this. Accept what your measurements tell you and choose the right size for you. In the same essence, your bra band size can be completely different from your clothing size, often larger as it is more about the size of your rib cage and diaphragm.
