Anyone who follows Jelayne Sheltonon on social media is quick to love her warmth and energy. The Hawaii-based fitness enthusiast and mother of three embodies the exuberant enthusiasm of an experienced athlete. It was a long time before she got to this location, however, and Shelton’s journey of self-discovery and struggle is well told.

Weight loss marathon
Shelton’s aha moment came shortly after the birth of her second child in February 2018: She weighed over 300 pounds and her doctor warned her life was in danger. Determined to see her children grow up, Shelton set himself a lofty goal to lose 100 pounds and laughingly agreed to run the Honolulu Marathon in December at the urging of a friend.
Their work started immediately. She adopted a ketogenic diet and began walking for 30 minutes every day. After a few months, she added 30 minutes of weight training three to four days a week to her schedule, targeting a different part of the body each day. By December she had lost 25 pounds, and although she only had a basic foundation of strength and limited physical endurance, Shelton decided to run the marathon she had vowed to do 10 months earlier. To her surprise and delight, she finished. “I’ve proven to myself that I can do it if I dedicate myself fully to my life,” she says.

Thanks to her success, Shelton went out of her way to improve her health. She continued her daily walks and workouts at home, and when she gained confidence, she switched to a gym and added group exercise classes to her routine. She also made a goal to build her confidence and sense of worth through positive self-talk and prayer. “I knew I had to be my own cheerleader,” she says.
Kick the addiction
Although Shelton was inspired by finishing the marathon, she hadn’t adequately addressed her eating problems. “Eating was a coping mechanism [I used to compensate] for being bullied and teased by my colleagues and family members, ”she says. “The more I ate, the more weight I gained. It became a kind of barrier or shield for me, even though that shield was exactly what caused the bullying. “
The further she got into her ketogenic lifestyle, the more obvious her nutritional problems became. Reducing even more carbohydrates and sweets caused Shelton mood swings and headaches, but also opened eyes to the severity of her addiction and made it easier to embrace change.
The healthier she ate, the better she felt and, of course, the more motivated she was to keep going. “I had more energy to play with my kids without feeling agitated or tired,” she says. “My children are happier now because mom is happier. It’s one of the greatest rewards of this entire journey. “
In February 2019, a year after the debate, Shelton hit her 100 pound weight loss goal. She is now a successful social media influencer motivating others to pursue their health and fitness goals. Your next goal is to become a personal trainer and nutritionist. “Losing weight and getting well won’t save your marriage or make people like you better,” she says. “But making yourself a # 1 priority is a game changer and you will come out happier in the end.”
