Working as a full spectrum DoulaMy job is to provide non-medical support to people through work, childbirth and beyond.

Childbirth is one of the most intense experiences a person can have, and at times it can feel like you’re leaving – because, in essence, you are.

The role of a doula is to physically, mentally, and emotionally support the birth of humans on this journey. To do this, I pull out of my bottomless bag of tricks and adapt to the needs of my customers at every moment.

One of the tools I keep coming back to is verbal affirmation, or encouraging self-affirmation through work mantras.

Often used in techniques like HypnobirthingA mantra is a word or phrase that you say to yourself repeatedly to get back to the center.

Mantras during labor give birthers a chance to ground themselves, find empowerment and strength, and give them something to hold onto while riding the intense waves of contractions.

Plan ahead

While work mantras can and do occur spontaneously during work, planning them in advance and incorporating them into yours can be helpful Birth plan.

There are many ways you can do this. The first step is to think about what mantras you think can be helpful during labor. We’ll give you some ideas later in this article.

You can write these down beforehand and discuss them with your support team – partner, doula, midwife, etc. – so they can remind you of them as the work gets more intense.

Depending on where you work, you can set your birthing room by decorating it with purchased or homemade birth mantra cards. Even if you don’t say the mantras to yourself in the heat of the moment, the energy of these phrases is there in the room.

From hip-hop to nature sounds and decoration shows. So why not be able to listen to your own voice ?!

If you have musical expertise, you can record and make your own songs using your birth mantras. Even if you never hear it during labor, it is a fun way for you and your partner to prepare for birth together or alone.

Whichever tools you choose to use your birth mantras, planning ahead is helpful in the sense that you can relate to these sentences. Trying to use these mantras towards the end of your pregnancy will give them time to embed yourself in your mind and body.

As in any relationship, when these mantras are made to feel familiar they have some sort of relationship with them. Words are powerful!

Keep it flexible

While planning ahead is important in all aspects of pregnancy, birth is unpredictable and it is important to allow room for flexibility.

You may need to adjust your mantras as your birth progresses. It can be helpful to have different confirmations on standby in case your birth deviates from your intended plan.

Of course, different birth mantras can come and go depending on where you are working. As you progress and the sensations intensify, you can drop the words entirely and fall into a rhythmic pattern of sounds, groans, and moans.

Brilliant! If it helps to keep hearing these mantras even after you’ve escaped speech, your birthing team can repeat them or your recording can have them play for you.

It’s also perfectly fine to tell your birthing team to stop at any point. There is no need to stick to something that doesn’t help or irritates you.

Mantras and affirmations

If you like what you hear, it may be time to come up with your own mantras! Here are some ideas to get you started – helpful tip – keep it short and sweet.

  • My baby is coming You are. Even if it feels like there’s no end in sight!
  • My body, my baby, my choice. You have autonomy over your body and the care that is provided for you.
  • I have the strength of my ancestors. Remember, every person who has come before you has been through this and their strength is flowing through your blood.
  • I have everything I need in me. They do. Though great when you need outside assistance too.
  • I trust the wisdom of my body. Remember that.
  • I’m in good hands How supported do you feel by your doctors?
  • My breath will carry me through. Breathing. One of the strongest memories at birth. If this is too verbose, you can just …
  • To breathe. As simple as that.

This is a friendly reminder that birth confirmations and mantras apply to everyone, no matter what your pregnancy and birth history is!
